Balaclava - Crimes of Faith

BALACLAVA’s debut full length 12″ LP entitled “Crimes of Faith” will *hopefully* be out August 30th.

Hailing from the filthy bowels of Richmond, Virginia, BALACLAVA spit out their warped take on raging hardcore punk with deadly intensity. The band was born in 2006, and took its name from the ski mask preferred by guerrilla militias, not pastries!
Drawing from the blueprints laid down by the cults of Neurosis, His Hero Is Gone and Cursed, this virulent quartet scorn the simplicity of genre labels, choosing instead to transmute their punk and metal roots into something altogether nastier. BALACLAVA's sound ranges from sludgy, crust-ridden dirges to restrained, ominous melodies to moments of blistering triumph. Their debut full-length, Crimes of Faith, is a thoughtful, multifaceted expression of seething animosity and fervent exultation.

Super stoked to be working with our buddies in Richmond, Forcefield Records. This is our biggest and most exciting project yet, so maybe we'll even get a real website together. It's always best when you work with good friends, and we got a bunch on this release.

"Wax worshippers, take note - the album is packaged in an un-coated reverse-board jacket with spot embossing with a printed un-coated inner sleeve."

Additionally, we will be putting out a cassette with Harrisonburg, VA based fuzz punks Kill Your Brain. Same fucked attitude as some of our favorites like Annihilation Time and Vincent Black Shadow. If you're into partying and riffing, you'll probably dig this release. Recorded at Inner Ear. Look for it in late August/Early September.

+ Very stoked to be working with Richmond punk beefcakes Balaclava on their first LP. It will be a split release with our good friends at Forcefield Records . Supposedly another label will be handling the CD version of the release, but details are still coming in on that one. We're looking at 500 copies that should be out in July. The tracks are being mastered at Mastermind right now, so it's only a matter of time before these rippers arrive.

The tracks are a killer melding of blasting D-beat, some heavier instrumental parts (think a more direct Isis), all ragers. A bit of a departure from some of their more straight forward earlier releases in every good possible way. Aweeeeome tones, meandering riffs, great quality recording. Get stoked.

+ One of DC's better kept hardcore secrets, THE GUILT, have released a full length cassette entitled "Worth Nothing. 7 tracks of brooding 80s style hardcore that you'd expect Grave Mistake to be putting out, featuring a bunch of folks you've likely seen playing in other bands. Co-released between the band and Cosmic Debris, 100 tapes are out and about. For fans of the Doubeks.

+ Cigarette's "Blush" cassette has been out for a bit and have been selling quickly. Pop some ludes and sink into the whirling mellow jams of Virginia’s finest export. Almost an hour of their heady jams, conjured from the depths of their smoky Arlington basement. Features Johnny from Pygmy Lush and our very own Richie. Grab one of these tapes if you're into the haze of day drinking or Pygmy Lush.

+ The Like Rats 7" has dwindled to a small number of copies, so it's looking like we'll be doing a repress of 200. Like Rats review from Aversion

"This self-titled effort is the second EP from Chicago, IL's Like Rats (released by Cosmic Debris), and it tears through five tracks of viciously aggressive hardcore in about 13 minutes. It's an interesting run, too, as their approach is certainly more diverse than most bands of this general nature. Apparently they're heavily influenced by Celtic Frost, and you can definitely hear some of that in the pounding surges of midpaced riffs that pop up throughout the compositions. And then there are the vocals, which are so acerbic and in your face that they really possess somewhat of a black metal-esque snarl. So, if you can imagine a frantic, blasting form of hardcore that has a powerviolence sort of undercurrent thanks to the Celtic Frost worship, and also flirts with touches of black metal and Swedish-tinged D-beat… the result would be pretty damn close to Like Rats. The recording's very effective as well, with a balanced mix that keeps things sounding nice and crisp without sacrificing a certain degree of harsh bite. What's not to like?"

The 7" is still available at the web store, but they are going fast. I'd wager to say that about half of them have sold already, which is fantastic. Get em' while they're still around.

We're very happy to say that we'll be working with Like Rats from Chicago on their debut 7". Five songs of ripping, primitive hardcore that's been described as "unhinged and pissed-off fast (think Hellhammer and Discharge in a cage match), but occasionally they'll throw in some Celtic Frost mid-paced riffing or even doomier passages. A procreation of the wicked, indeed." Not a bad description, but I'd say imagine it being a good bit heavier with more scathing vocals. PRIMITIVE.

The record will be out in July.

The Ambulars, Washington, D.C.'s answer to Kraftwerk (kidding), is embarking on a three week tour this summer and will have a 7" out just in time on Cosmic Debris Records. The record features three songs and a silk screened cover. Artwork, more details, etc. will be revealed as they are made available.

What better time to start a pop punk then summer. Last summer, long time friends Mikey, Jen, and Andy decided to do just that. After adding Joey for drum support, the Ambulars started playing a lot of shows in Washington, D.C... Mostly at the Girl Cave. They started to get a pretty good following (for D.C.). Maybe it was just because they have a lot of friends, but it might be because they were fucking good and energetic. The end of summer meant that Jen had to leave the area for grad school (not punk).

This is the real friggin' deal. No more acoustic teasers. The sound falls somewhere between punkier pop-punk like the Ergs or Lattermen and the sugary stuff like Fall Out Boy or New Found Glory. As before, I have a really hard time comparing them to any other band. The only band that comes to mind is Alkaline Trio, but that is probably because I know how much Mikey loves them (enough to skip one of his old bands shows to see them. Jokes.) My favorite songs on this release are "The Rain," "Bookmarked," and "Lighthouse." Surprise, surprise! All of these songs were written by Mikey. He also wrote "Daily Inheritance" on their acoustic ep, Summer Fling. Everything he has been touching recently is gold.

This band is a fresh breath of air. Punkier pop-punk is going strong (Bridge and Tunnel are fucking awesome), but the poppier pop-punk realm of recent times has been dominated by shitty, washediup metalcore kids trying to cash in on "heavy" pop with screaming and breakdowns. Seriously, This Time Next Year, Four Years Strong, A Day To Remember, and Set Your Goals all fucking suck.

I have no idea if this is translated correctly. you judge...

Duo guitar / drums from Washington who is a modern hardcore that will draw in lots of influences that ranges from classical to punk plans passages heavier sludge limits (but never long and boring) through plans more jerky that make me think of emotions as more groups Sinaloa ... I'm also a big fan of his from scratch that is rotten as I love and which gives a consistent tone to the whole.
There is apparently a (e?) member of Des Ark (band highly recommendable) inside.
The original artwork is super super boring but to manipulate if t'essaies out the tape while driving you can die at any moment: in cardboard sleeve with a triangle cut and full color insert with equally class.

"Two weeks ago I picked up the Pizza/Tideland split 7". I think Mike Taylor (who plays in Pizza) put this out. It's pretty weird and not what I expected at all. Pizza reminds me of Sebedoh from back in the day. That Mike Taylor is in this band doesn't surprise me. Tideland is pretty noisy and somewhat a-Tonal and dirty sounding. Both bands are definitely paying homage to the grunge/Seattle/90's indie rock years. Sorta scary music, Tideland gives me the chills. Pizza just trips me out. It doesn't sound like Sebedoh I should clarify, it just reminds me of their weird records."

November is halfway over. Ingrid tapes are moving fast, and other projects are coming together slowly but surely. I guess it's safe to make an announcement about at least one of them at this point.

Two awesome bands from Virginia, Pizza (http://www.myspace.com/hardcandyman ) and Tideland (http://www.myspace.com/tidelandmusic) have recorded for a split 7" to be released hopefully in December, but at the very latest in January. Pizza have a really great slop-pop-youth-bedroom-romance vibe, and Tideland are a real solid melding of dirty Sterling noise run through a reverb tank combined with a lot of time spent listening to sonic youth and all yr other favorite bands from 1991. Two songs from Pizza, one from Tideland. This is really exciting.

Got another release hopefully planned for November, but we'll see how that comes together before jinxing it by making any sort of "announcement."
